Adopt a Hero - Cheetah

Oudtshoorn

Activity Description

THOR

Thor [pronounced thawr] noun. Scandinavian Mythology. the god of thunder, rain, and farming
He is the only cub born to mother Princess.
Single cubs are unusual in cheetahs as they usually have litters of 3 or more cubs, and from experience we know that a single cub usually does not stimulate the mother’s milk production enough and may cause it to dry up.
Due to this he was closely monitored by our animal care team. On day 5, Princess took him outside. We were hoping it was just to get some healthy sunrays, however we know that if she does not carry him back, in most cases, it means that there is a problem.
To our dismay, very late that afternoon, he was still outside. Due to a cold front approaching that evening, and cheetah cubs being very susceptible to cold, our team decided to “pull” him to avoid losing him throughout the night. He has since been in 24 hour care with our animal team and gaining strength at a remarkable rate. He started eating meat and already weighs more than 1.2 kilograms
Thor certainly does his name justice. He is a fighter at heart and his development is much quicker than any cub before him. The birth of little Thor and other cheetah cubs is a result of our endangered species breeding program. The young cub now has the important role of assisting us in promoting the message of conservation and staggering rate at which cheetahs are disappearing from the wild.
Every time we are blessed with the birth of a baby animal it does brings an air of magic to the ranch. A sense of excitement fills the air and like a rainstorm it refreshes our facility, our purpose and our motivation.
It reinforces all the hard work that we do, knowing that only happy animals breed. It instils us, as staff, with even more pride and opens our eyes to the privilege of the job!
Most importantly though, we get to share it with the public, we get to educate, we get to inspire and we get to conserve.

TROY, THANDI, T’CHALLA, THANE (TOPAZ&TROY NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION)

First time mom, Pippa gave birth to 5 cheetah cubs. Their names are Topaz (female), Thandi (female), T’challa (male), Thane (male) and Troy (male).
Cango Wildlife Ranch has a long history with the African cheetah. For over 28 years, these extraordinary cats have been part of a breeding program to produce offspring from genetically valuable individuals to bolster pure cheetah bloodlines. We have the oldest and largest cheetah breeding program in the southern hemisphere.
The Cheetah Preservation Foundation, our non-profit organization, has been established to support the program. Our organization has worked tirelessly for the conservation of cheetah and other endangered species. Cango Wildlife Ranch has produced more cheetah cubs than that of the entire United States and we have therefore had a dramatic and vital impact on assisting the conservation gene pool of this species.
The Cheetah may be the fastest animal on earth, but are struggling to outrun the threats to its extinction. With less than 7000 cheetahs that are left across the entire continent, they remain immensely at risk.
The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything. This is why we are the voice of these animals, and we will persevere in bringing awareness to their plight and will continue to protect them.

As a proud conservation and education facility we receive no government funding, which is an enormous challenge with the overheads that we face. People seldom comprehend with the massive costs that we face on a daily basis. Our facility is owned by a family, and receives no government financial aid/funding as a zoological premises. Every day we are faced with exorbitant running costs of maintenance, water, electricity, etc… in addition our primary focus is to ensure that all the animals receive the highest standard medical attention and a calculated varied diet (species-specific) good enough for any human to eat. Our standards are exceptionally high and it all comes at a cost, as do the many hours of labor put in by our over 100 dedicated and animal-loving staff. Some months are good for us… but unfortunately some months are not as kind, however, we continue to work hard to provide the best for our animals and our tourists.

We receive very few sponsorship’s and donations in general, but are always grateful for the help that we do receive. We have built our own on-site Animal Care Centre (hospital) which is of massive assistance to us, and the animals.

All funds are contributed towards our Cheetah Preservation Foundation, who ensures that your animal is very well looked after!
